The answer is Canada! A big life change is on the horizon where I am moving to Canada with my partner (Roisin). It all started after our road trip to Canada in 2023 where we fell in love with the place. After much discussion, we applied for the International Experience Canada (IEC) program to get a work permit. There are multiple pools to apply to: Young Professionals, International Co-op (internship) and Working Holiday. The Working Holiday gives the most flexibility and does not require a job sponsorship to enter the country. The IEC program is open to under 35s and has a maximum 2-year stay. After applying for the working holiday in December, we were successful in applying. Now, we have been granted a Port of Entry Letter, and the planning continues! We will be flying out in May and have chosen to live in Vancouver.
Why Vancouver? Well, it's the city that has it all, with an ocean and mountains surrounding it. It will serve as an ideal base camp to live a more outdoorsy and mountainous lifestyle. Vancouver has the advantage of more job opportunities compared to Alberta. And the climate is less extreme than the Canadian Rockies. So it seems like the ideal city to settle into and call home.
I am very excited and slightly nervous about moving abroad. Work has been very helpful and accommodating to this life change which I am thankful for. It has been a lifelong ambition to live overseas, and even though it will be challenging, I will learn so much from the 2 years! And of course, I will be posting about the journey and time in Canada plus documenting the IEC process.
What does this mean for the Blog? Moving our life from the UK to Canada will be a new challenge, and I have to be realistic with expectations. I will need to focus on finding jobs, accommodation, and settling into Vancouver. The content might be more sporadic and irregular, but I hope to try to post 1 blog article a week ideally. Once things have settled down, there might be a change in direction to document the move from UK to Canada. And of course, all the hiking and outdoor adventures will be great inspiration for more content. So please be patient and stay tuned as it's still 2 months before flying out so plenty more ideas to write and share. |
