A cap is a universally loved piece of gear, but finding the truly perfect one for both high-output running and rugged mountain hiking is notoriously difficult. Traditionally, standard cotton caps do not breathe well and trap heat, and not all ultralight running hats feel tough enough for backcountry hikes. After I did some research, I decided on the Ciele ALZCap and now own 3 caps!
It almost immediately replaced my much-loved Arc’teryx trekking cap as my undisputed go-to for both local mountain trails and urban training runs. In this comprehensive review, find out exactly why the incredibly breathable Ciele ALZCap is one of the best running and hiking hats on the market today.

Ciele ALZCap: Introduction
Overview
Ciele Athletics has been making lightweight running caps since 2014. The Canadian brand excels at high-performance and protective running hats, with lots of other lightweight apparel too. The popularity has exploded thanks to the vast colourways and styles to suit everyone’s taste. Most runners seem to own a Ciele running cap for good reason. Despite the elevated price tag, they offer premium performance in all conditions, from an easy run to a day hike to a sunny race. So when I was looking for a dedicated running brand, I couldn’t ignore Ciele. The question was which Cap to choose?
Ciele ALZCap

Their most popular cap is the GOCap, a 5-panel lightweight and breathable running hat with many styles. However, I have a smaller head and prefer a more subtle clean style, so I decided on the Ciele ALZCap- Athletics SL – Vinya, to be exact. The ALZCap has increased COOLmatic™ mesh coverage for more breathability vs the Original GOCap. And has a reduced size for a lower profile, fitted and modern design. There is still the trademark SOFTflat brim on this version for protection.
Ciele ALZCap Variants

Now, to try to explain all the different Ciele ALZCap variants. The Red (Vinya) Cap and Black (Wish) ALZCaps I own are Athletics SL with a flatter brim. Whereas the ALZCap SC has a SOFTCurve Brim, which is pre-structured and gives better cap style protection (see the Pink one Roisin is sporting). The SC version weighs an extra 9g (58g) over the SL. The Horizon version uses COOLmatic | PLUS™ mesh coverage for better breathability and odour control than the others, using a SOFTflat small brim still.
Then the ALZCap Trail takes the Horizon and adds an emergency whistle for trail running! Also, there is a Carbon version as the elite level hat with a COOLmatic | EXP mesh embedded with carbon fibres for temperature regulation and odour control. The Athletics SL and C Plus denote the Ciele logo styling on the front panel.
Pick the standard Ciele ALZCap if you want something ultra-light, stylish, and sporty. Choose the Carbon or Horizon versions if you need extra odour control or wicking performance in hot, sweaty runs. Consider the GOCap SC if you prefer a deeper fit and more coverage.
Running and hiking with the Ciele ALZCap
Part of the reason I chose this Running cap was the sleek and modern style with minimal logo size and versatile colours. I fell in love with the ALZCap for its comfort, breathability and packability. The soft and flexible brim allows it to be shoved into a pocket easily or a backpack when on the trail.
Where this cap earned its keep
I don’t review gear out of a box. Read the full destination guides where the Ciele ALZCap kept the sun and sweat out of my eyes.

This running cap has been on hiking adventures in Canada and the Swiss Alps, plus trekking in the Dolomites and Patagonia. It’s been thoroughly tested in summer heat and heavy rain. The UPF sun protection is a big factor in using it for summer, as the shorter brim is more exposed than other caps. But I love the shorter brim to wear it backwards, as it doesn’t hit my backpack.

I regularly wear the hat on runs in the summer on roads and trails. Up to 20 degrees, the ALZCap wicks moisture away effectively, and I’m a warm runner. And the reflective detailing is a nice touch for someone like me who enjoys running at 5 am in the dark morning months. Whilst the GOCap is more popular, the compact and more fitted style is perfect for me, and I would recommend it for people with a smaller head size.
There is a large variety of styles and colours to suit everyone’s taste. My girlfriend and I own 3 ALZCaps between us, and the unisex style means we can easily swap them. These caps have both been included in my Ultimate Trekking Kit List and Hiking Kit List.

Ciele ALZCap: Selling Points
- Breathability: The best-selling point of the Ciele ALZCap is the high ventilation and effective moisture wicking. This is due to the COOLmatic™ fabric, which uses mesh panels to increase airflow. The COOLmatic has the added benefit of fast drying, too, when very sweaty or in the rain. There’s an absorbent band to prevent sweat from dripping onto the face.
- Comfort and fit: The fitted and lower-profile ALZCap is ideal for runners with smaller heads or those who dislike oversized caps. The 5-panel design is universal and, with its snug fit, offers minimal movement when running. On the rear, there is a strap and buckle to adjust the cap for the desired tightness.
- Ultra‑packable: The ALZCap is lightweight and folds effectively thanks to the flexible, pliable brim. It takes up little space in a backpack or running vest. The brim stays usable and maintains structure over time.
- Stylish: The clean, modern and minimalist design makes it versatile for casual use too. There are plenty of colourways option,s and fits to suit everyone’s fashion style.
- Excellent sun protection: The UPF +40 rating helps protect the head from UV rays on the front panel and brim. This was an important factor for hiking and trekking when exposed to the sun for long periods.
- Sustainability: The ALZCap uses recycled Repreve polyester materials, and Ciele provides a ‘millions miles’ long-term warranty.
- Reflectivity: There are subtle reflective logos and prints that aid low‑light visibility and nighttime running.

Ciele ALZCap: Considerations
- Limited coverage: The Short brim may not protect as much from rain or intense midday sun.
- Single size only: One of my selling points is a disadvantage for those wanting a Larger fit. It’s not available in M/L or deep-fit sizes, so it’s recommended to try before purchasing.
- Price point: At over £40 or $50 USD, this running hat has a premium price compared to basic running caps, though typical for Ciele quality.
- Reflective Details: Unfortunately, the Ciele reflective lettering on the front panel has fallen off my Black Cap. The rest of the hat is functionally great, but it now loses its Ciele identity.

Best Use Cases: Where the Ciele ALZCap Shines
The Ciele ALZCap is far more than an everyday lifestyle accessory; it is a specialised piece of high-performance technical apparel. Here is exactly where this low-profile 5-panel cap delivers its greatest advantages:
- High-Mileage Marathon Training & Race Day: When grinding through intense, multi-month training blocks and locking in long weekend runs, sweat management is critical. The ALZCap’s lightweight construction and specialised fabric pull moisture away from your brow instantly, preventing salt and sting from dripping into your eyes when pushing your limits on the pavement.
- Technical Mountain Hiking & Trekking: For alpine ascents and high-altitude wilderness routes where temperatures fluctuate rapidly, this cap is an exceptional companion. It handles the blistering sun of exposed ridges with UPF +40 protection, yet breathes efficiently enough during steep, vertical climbs to keep your head from overheating.
- Fast-and-Light Backcountry Travel: Space is always at a premium when packing an alpine pack or a running vest. Because the SOFTcurve brim is completely pliable and crushable, you can ruthlessly stuff the ALZCap into a tiny pocket or hip-belt pouch. The moment you pull it out, it instantly pops back into its aerodynamic shape without any permanent creasing or damage.
- Warm-Weather Triathlons & Track Workouts: During fast, high-output sessions where you are moving at speed, traditional deep-crown hats can catch the wind or shift around. The snug, secure, low-profile fit ensures the hat remains securely locked to your head, even when maintaining a blistering pace into a stiff headwind.
Competitors
While the Ciele ALZCap is a dominant force on both the trails and city streets, the technical headwear market features several strong contenders. Depending on whether you prioritise maximum UV protection, specialised packability, or a more traditional aesthetic, here is how the competition stacks up:
- 1. Fractel M-Sierra – The closest head-to-head competitor.
- The Details: Fractel is making massive waves in the running community, and the M-Sierra serves as a direct alternative to the ALZCap. It delivers phenomenal breathability, all-day comfort, and fast-drying materials that perform brilliantly under pressure. It features a slightly larger brim for improved facial shade, but the trade-off is a lower sun protection rating, offering UPF +30 fabric compared to Ciele’s more robust UPF +40 panels.
- 2. Salomon Shakeout Cap – The classic trail-running baseball cap.
- The Details: Coming from a highly reputable heritage trail running company, the Shakeout Cap offers a more traditional baseball-style aesthetic rather than a modern 5-panel layout. It features excellent quick-drying properties and comes in a great array of colours. However, because it lacks the expansive technical mesh panelling found on the ALZCap, it simply cannot match Ciele’s level of pure, high-output breathability on hot days.
- 3. Arc’teryx Aerios 5-Panel Cap – The premium, minimalist alpine alternative.
- The Details: If you want a top-tier option with a premium finish, the Aerios is a beautiful piece of engineering. This ultralightweight cap is available in two distinct sizes for a highly customised fit and features exceptionally clean, sophisticated colourways. While it matches Ciele on weight and technical airflow, it commands a much higher price tag and provides less structured sun protection across the top of the head.
- 4. Buff 5-Panel Air Cap – The hyper-lightweight UV protector.
- The Details: Known globally for their neckwear, Buff’s entry into the 5-panel market is an incredibly lightweight and packable option. It steps up the defensive specs with a maximum UPF +50 sun protection rating and features a highly functional rear drawstring adjustment for quick on-the-fly fit tweaks. The downside is that its aesthetic is strictly sporty, offering fewer colourways and a less refined style for casual, post-run wear than the ALZCap.
- 5. Patagonia Duckbill Cap – The eco-conscious, hyper-packable classic.
- The Details: The Duckbill is a legendary piece of ultralight running gear that leans heavily into sustainability, utilising recycled materials throughout. Its open-mesh canopy provides unparalleled, high-volume breathability, and the foam brim can be completely crushed flat into a pocket. However, that open mesh means it lacks comprehensive sun protection across the top of your head, and the exceptionally short brim provides minimal facial coverage against glare.

Ciele ALZCap- Kit Rating
This is the first hat review, so the categories were decided and weighted as follows. Fit and comfort are the most important categories for long hikes and treks; having a reliable cap with all-day comfort is key. Especially for a running cap, ventilation is highly weighted as it’s easy to overheat otherwise and impact performance.
Next up, protection from the elements should be considered with UPF protection and an added bonus. More focused on trekking, packability, and the ability to store easily are required for when the conditions don’t require a cap. And finally, value and versatility, as with every review, are you getting your money’s worth, and can it be used for multiple activities?

Final Thoughts
The Ciele ALZCap is masterfully tailored to all types of runners who demand effective breathability, lasting comfort, and a modern aesthetic in a lightweight, low-profile 5-panel cap. Beyond the pavement, I now consider this an exceptional hiking and trekking cap, perfectly meeting the rigorous performance requirements of sun protection and moisture management on the trail. The ALZCap delivers phenomenal technical performance from its recycled COOLmatic fabric and pliable minimalist design. Its wonderfully snug fit and soft, easily packable short brim make it an absolute staple for training, travel, and race day, while the incredibly generous lifetime guarantee adds immense long-term value.
Pick it if you want an ultra-light, stylish, and sporty headlamp-compatible cap. Choose the Carbon or Horizon versions if you need heavy-duty odour control or maximum wicking performance for hot, incredibly sweaty sessions. Conversely, consider the standard GOCap if you prefer a deeper, more traditional fit with extra coverage. Whether you are logging local miles in a T100 triathlon training block or packing it for a global trek, it will not let you down.
FAQs
What is the difference between the Ciele ALZCap and the Ciele GOCap?
The main difference comes down to the fit and profile. The GOCap is Ciele’s original, classic 5-panel running hat with a standard depth and a flat brim. The ALZCap (Allez Cap) is built with a lower profile, a more fitted crown, and a shorter, pre-curved SOFTcurve brim. It is generally better suited for runners with smaller heads or those who prefer a more streamlined, aerodynamic fit.
Is the Ciele ALZCap machine washable?
Yes! One of the biggest selling points of Ciele hats is that they are entirely machine washable. You can throw your sweaty ALZCap directly into the washing machine on a cold, delicate cycle and hang it to dry. The pliable brim won’t warp or crease in the wash.
Does the Ciele ALZCap have UV protection?
Absolutely. The ALZCap features UPF +40 protection on the brim, front panel, and back panel, making it an excellent choice for long summer runs and intense sun exposure.
Is the brim on the Ciele ALZCap packable?
Yes. The ALZCap uses Ciele’s proprietary SOFTcurve brim, which is completely pliable. This means you can easily crush the hat and stuff it into a running vest, a pocket, or a travel bag, and it will instantly pop back into its original shape when you put it on.
