    Updated Technical Aspects

One of the key features of this midweight walking boot is the soft leather upper with the updated ankle cuff design for immediate comfort. The stitching pattern has been designed for better robustness and the overall shape and fit has been revised to allow more toe box space. The Vibram Energy II outer sole has increased rubber compared to the older model for great versatile grip. The sole has added PU cushioning for support and rigidity in the mid sole construction. Finally, there are revised metal details which offer better fit and adjustment for the laces.

Scarpa have specific technologies to bring these leather boots to the modern times. First is ACTIV Impact Technology which optimise the sole construction to absorb harsh impacts with the ground. Scarpa Terra GTX: ✔️ Selling Points

    • Superior Waterproofing: Gore-Tex lining provides reliable protection in wet conditions. The Scarpa Terra GTX were tested in torrential rain in Switzerland and kept out the rain! The leather naturally takes longer to dry but the wax coating adds another protection layer. The gusset tongue is effective at protecting from rain, muddles or splashes around the cuff.
    • Excellent Comfort: The Terra GTX Boots have a minimal break-in period. Thanks to the soft leather upper, these boots quickly mould to your feet. There is a removable in-sole on top of the PU cushioned midsole to help with the ergonomic fit and long term comfort. The roomy toe box reduced chances of rubbing and blisters.
    • High Quality Materials: Scarpa have chosen high quality full grain leather and tough metal hardware to give premium quality and add longevity. This does increase the price to over £200 but investing in good footwear will reduce the chances of discomfort, breaking early or poor technical performance.
    • Durable Construction: The full-grain leather are premium and hardwearing. The stitching pattern has been designed for robustness by minimising weak points for better longevity. And with any Vibram outsole, you are guaranteed reliable performance for years of wear and tear.
    • Breathability: The Scarpa Terra GTX has effective moisture control thanks to the Gore-Tex membrane. This is mainly effective in warmer temperatures (summer) and helps reduce the risk of blisters.
    • Ankle Support: A key hiking boot benefit over shoes is the ankle support. The ankle support is relatively flexible so you can do easy scrambling on boulders. They aren’t too restrictive and work well with heavy backpack loads on uneven terrains.
    • Iconic Style: The leather boot has been a popular hiking classic for decades. Modern technology has helped improve grip, comfort and weather protection whilst maintaining the simplistic design.

    Scarpa Terra GTX: ⚠️Considerations

    • Limited for Technical Terrain: Not ideal for highly technical mountain terrain or scrambling. The Vibram sole provides great grip on mud, snow and trails. However does not provide the precision of other hiking shoes or an approach shoe (See La Sportiva TX4 review to see the benefits). The Scarpa Terra GTX have proved to work well on scrambling routes in Snowdonia but wouldn’t suit Via Ferrata or rocky exposed routes. These boots are best in spring to autumn conditions so be careful if using primarily for winter expeditions. Additionally, there is no insulation for warmth in winter or cold climates.
    • Requires Maintenance: Regular cleaning and conditioning are necessary to maintain waterproofing performance. As with all leather, it is recommended to apply care products to prevent cracking of the leather outer.
    • Narrow Fit: May not be suitable for those with wider feet despite the increased toe box size. It could be worth sizing up but always best to try them on before buying.
